How do SuDS work compared to conventional drainage systems?
SuDS mimic nature. By controlling runoff volume, they slow the flow of water and improve water quality by filtering pollutants through vegetation. When a flash flood takes place, it can overwhelm conventional drainage systems and polluted water can pool on the surface.
SuDS store water temporarily, reducing peak flows during storms and we can design SuDS to manage 20, 30, 50 or 100-year storms.
Is funding available for SuDS in schools?
Yes. The Department of Education has a government funding opportunity which is currently available to help schools implement SuDS including rain gardens, planters, and other blue/green infrastructure to reduce flood risk while enhancing biodiversity and the overall amenity within school grounds.
