JOB PURPOSE:
The consultant will work from one of the EPG offices or remotely, as well as completing site visits.
As Head of Water at EPG you will lead, manage and oversee all aspects of the design and implementation of sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS), Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs), and detailed drainage designs for a range of projects. This role requires a proactive approach, technical expertise.
By providing strong leadership and technical expertise, you will drive continuous improvement in water services, foster a safe and effective working environment.
Engagement with clients at an early stage to anticipate their needs and scope and price the required geoenvironmental works for EPG.
Team leader for SuDS and Civils designs produced. Liaising with internal EPG staff and teams, external sub-contractors, clients and collaborators as necessary.
EPG will support the professional development of the consultant, providing opportunities to work collaboratively with the wider team to gain experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Develop and implement the strategic vision and direction for the Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) department, ensuring alignment with environmental goals, regulatory requirements, and organisational objectives.
- Lead the design, specification, and implementation of sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) for a variety of projects, including residential, commercial, and infrastructure developments.
- Set performance targets, conduct regular appraisals, and provide training and development opportunities to enhance the team’s skills, expertise, and commercial acumen.
- Lead, motivate and develop the water team to ensure the on-time delivery of high-quality design work.
- Foster a collaborative and safe working environment, encouraging innovation and problem-solving within the department.
- Develop, review and QA detailed designs and reports produced.
- Prepare technical reports, design documents, fee proposals and project proposals.
- Ensure designs adhere to industry best practices, national standards (e.g., CIRIA SuDS Manual, Building Regulations), and company quality assurance procedures.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring deadlines and budgets are met.
- Stay updated on the latest developments in SuDS, drainage design, and water management policies and standards.
- Maintain and develop key client, supplier and regulator relationships, always maintaining EPG’s industry standing as experts in our field, and providers of cost-effective and scientifically robust solutions.
- Relish opportunities and work proactively when undertaking research in the course of work at EPG. Contribute to, or lead on, development of alternative methods of working, or writing industry publications.
- Work alongside the EPG senior management team in improvements to our operational practices, in areas of data management, digital software, health, safety, environment and quality, and training and staff development.
- Work collaboratively with STRI Group colleagues to help achieve mutual commercial and reputational objectives.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
- Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or other water or engineering related subject.
- Minimum of [5-10] years of experience in the water industry.
- Chartered or working towards Chartered status (e.g., ICE, CIWEM).
- In-depth knowledge of UK SuDS legislation, planning policies, and design standards (e.g., CIRIA C753).
- Strong project management skills, including experience managing multiple projects concurrently.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to prepare clear, concise technical reports, drawings and present findings to clients and stakeholders.
- Have a track record in business development and building client relationships.
- Experience in mentoring and developing junior staff.
- A desire to take a novel approach to problem solving.
- Excellent word processing and excel skills along with broad IT proficiency.
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES:
- A full UK driving license.
- Proficient in the use of drainage design software (e.g., MicroDrainage, Civil 3D, Tuflow, InfoDrainage).
- A strong external profile and network and/or experience on working groups or committees in the industry.
- Experience managing commercial performance of multi-phase consultancy projects.
Reporting to: Phil Williams, Director
Working Hours: Default would be full time, 8:45am – 5pm Monday to Friday
Could consider 4 days per week or flexible working if required for the right candidate
