Ground gas and contamination

Geoenvironmental services

Our specialist team of geoenvironmental consultants and engineers provide technical advice for all types of developments on brownfield land or with ground contamination issues.

We’re slightly unconventional and honesty is our nature. Our innovative solutions will ensure your project objectives and aims will be met. We pride ourselves on keeping an open line of communication with all our clients, ensuring we’re all on the same page as we tailor our offering to your needs.

Ground investigation

We design intrusive works with full consideration of the likely ground and groundwater conditions, conceptual model, and aims of the investigation works. Site visits during the works are standard and we can supervise the ground investigation contractor on your behalf, ensuring that the technical objectives of the investigation are met, and that best practice standards and guidance for investigation works are adhered to.

Investigating highly contaminated complex sites or landfills is the norm for us. On these sites we like to use more innovative non-intrusive, or minimally intrusive methods where we can. Designing out unnecessary health and safety risks, reducing potentially hazardous (and costly) waste disposal, and reducing the potential for cross-contamination.

We can help scope, specify and oversee intrusive ground investigation works on greenfield or potentially contaminated brownfield sites. While we do not offer in-house drilling services, our independence ensures that we recommend the most efficient approach to intrusive investigation works, gathering relevant, valuable data to inform our assessments.

Efficient and effective ground remediation

Have you identified a potential risk from ground contamination? Then remediation work may be required.

Ground remediation measures can include:

  • Excavation and removal of contaminated soils from site
  • Treatment of contaminated soil and groundwater in-situ
  • Engineering solutions within the ground (for contamination containment)
  • Ground gas mitigation membranes, vent layers or structures.

With ongoing significant increases in landfill tax rates and soil disposal costs, determining the most efficient and sustainable solution which minimises waste is crucial.

Our specialist engineers provide effective and technically robust remediation designs, incorporating both traditional and cutting-edge proven technologies to ensure that the preferred solution is appropriate, safe, and cost effective.

We can provide site visits during the remediation phase to ensure that the technical specification is being met. This could take the form of verification supervision or monitoring on behalf of the client.

Designing the best strategy for the project

The responsibility for gas protection design often falls through the cracks and advice provided from manufacturers and suppliers can be biased, which results in over specification of gas protection products and increased carbon footprint on the project.

Our gas and VOC mitigation design service is independent and backed by unparalleled specialist industry expertise. We offer a full, detailed design service for ground gas and VOC protection systems for all types of buildings and brownfield sites.

Our gas mitigation designs are site specific, taking into account structural and architectural requirements. Our in-house structural waterproofing team means we can offer combined protection systems for gas and waterproofing.

Is this work environmentally sustainable?

Our standard work practice involves looking at the project to assess the potential for incorporating sustainable remediation techniques as this will reduce the overall carbon footprint and the environmental impact.

We have demonstrated that early involvement in project evaluation enables our engineers to provide an effective, technically robust remediation design; incorporating both traditional and the latest technologies to ensure that the preferred solution is appropriate, safe and budgets are considered.

Sticking to the guidelines…

As a company we are proud of the fact that we have contributed to much of the guidance on landfill, ground gas and VOC assessment within the UK; including British Standards BS8576, BS8485, CIRIA Reports C665, C735 and C748, Claire Research Bulletin RB17 and Claire Technical Bulletins TB16 and TB17, NHBC NF94.

In addition to this we have authored peer reviewed papers in journals and present training courses in the UK and worldwide.
